Unlocking Green Jobs for Youth in Solar Irrigation
Market demand for solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS) is large,
with the market for solar water pumps (SWPs) estimated to be
approximately USD 30 million; and growing sustainably. A significant job opportunity of approximately 7,000 – 10, 000 direct
jobs exists in the solar irrigation sector in Kenya. This opportunity can
be seized by under-employed rural youth, if appropriately trained.
There are multiple types of roles needed to service the solar irrigation
sector in Kenya. For these roles, different hard and soft skills are
needed. The Government has proposed plans to expand irrigation
and promote the uptake of efficient off-grid energy equipment in
agriculture through capacity building and demonstration projects
outlined in the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation
Strategy (2020-2025) and the National Water Management Plan
(2030)..
