FIELD VISIT TO LIGHTHOUSE FARMS UNDER SPIS-4-FNS PROJECT
Introduction

Project team during farm vist in Laikipia
The SPIS-4-FNS project team conducted a field visit to engage with Lighthouse farmers in Isiolo, Meru, and Laikipia counties. The visit aimed to assess the performance of installed solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS), document success stories, and strengthen collaboration between farmers and project partners.
The visit concluded with a plenary workshop where farmers, project partners, and researchers shared experiences and explored opportunities for scaling the technology.
Engaging with Farmers

The team visited farms where solar-powered irrigation systems have been installed. Farmers demonstrated how they are using solar pumps combined with drip irrigation to grow maize, vegetables, and fruits.
It was inspiring to see the transformation taking place:
“I now harvest twice a year instead of once. My family has enough to eat and extra to sell.” – Lighthouse Farmer, Laikipia
Key Successes Observed

| Area | Impact |
|---|---|
| Yields | Significant increase in crop production compared to rainfed farming |
| Water Use | Efficient drip irrigation has reduced water consumption |
| Energy Costs | Farmers no longer spend on diesel or petrol for pumping |
| Income | Extra harvests mean more food and additional income for families |
Farmer Initiatives

-
Crop diversification – Growing a variety of crops improves nutrition and farm resilience
-
Group formation – Farmers supporting each other reduces costs and shares knowledge
-
Regular system care – Simple maintenance keeps systems running efficiently
